 Excellent shelter for group campingFeb 25, 2009
This is called a shelter and not a shade canopy for a reason. The Outfitterwing is super durable -- the strong and fabric and is intended to provide excellent wind resistance and waterproofing. We've set up river trip kitchens and shelter from rainstorms using Outfitterwings and these tarps hold up to high wind really well. The concatenated cut of the tarp holds up to tension well with a minimum of flapping in high winds. The first reason to pick this product is for rugged shelter.
But you can also use it for shade. The secret to using this shelter for a sun shade is in how you pitch it. Pitch it high off the ground for maximum airflow on a sunny day. We've used it on hot sandy beaches at river camps and this works very well, even with our older model's darker gray color than the current tan which absorbs less sunlight. Pitch it lower for shelter, and adjust the pitch so that the wing is lowest on the windward side. The poles that come with the Outfitterwing are good, but not adjustable. I recommend getting some taller adjustable poles to provide more flexibility for pitching this tarp low for shelter or higher for shade. Kelty makes some good taller, adjustable tarp poles that I use. When we're rafting, we'll sometimes use oars from the rafts as poles, but this is best done with heavier guylines than the cords that come with the Outfitterwing.
The Outfitterwing is a classic design originated by Moss, and the product was acquired by MSR. The Outfitterwing's quality remains high and the original tan color has returned after a couple of years of a gray MSR color. Each point on the tarp has a pocket for storing guylines that closes with a hook and loop patch. This product is truly outfitter grade and it's reasonably priced for its utility and quality.

It does do well in wind and sets up quickly, nice piece of gear.
Except for one thing, I don't know why but the material seems to collect and radiate heat to anything under it. If you plan on using this in a hot climate, this is not good. Humans under this thing in the summer will bake. Next time I use it, I might try to see if a Space blanket can be configured on top of it some how.
